Unfortunately, the grub problem in our area isn’t going away any time soon.
It is still a realatively new and growing problem in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and so even the guarantees and efforts of companies who are equipped to handle it are limited.
When neighbouring properties are hosting beetles and larvae, even treated lawns remain exposed year after year.
That doesn’t mean nothing can be done.
It just means expectations need to be realistic.
What to Look For
Before assuming it’s grubs, check for:
-
Turf that lifts easily like loose carpet
-
Brown patches that don’t recover with watering
-
Increased bird, raccoon, or skunk activity
-
Thin or missing root systems
-
Irregular patch shapes (not straight irrigation patterns)
The only way to confirm is by inspecting small soil sections and counting larvae.
What Can Be Done Cost-Effectively
Not every lawn requires aggressive chemical treatment.
Depending on severity, options may include:
-
Monitoring grub counts before reacting
-
Spot-treating instead of full-lawn applications
-
Strengthening turf with aeration and overseeding
-
Improving irrigation and soil health
-
Applying preventative treatment at the correct seasonal timing
In many cases, building dense, healthy turf reduces visible damage even if some grubs are present.
How Much Work Is Actually Involved
Repairing grub damage is not just spraying a product.
Proper rehabilitation often includes:
-
Inspecting and confirming active larvae
-
Removing dead turf
-
Aerating compacted soil
-
Adding topsoil or levelling
-
Overseeding or reseeding
-
Careful watering management for 6–8 weeks
It requires follow-up — not just a one-time visit.
Why Treated Lawns Can Still Be Affected
Even if your lawn is treated:
-
Adult beetles fly from neighbouring properties
-
Eggs are laid across property lines
-
Soil conditions vary from yard to yard
-
Treatment timing may differ
Grub management is rarely a “one and done” solution.
It is seasonal and ongoing.
Where We Fit In
Our role is primarily diagnosis and guidance.
We help by:
-
Confirming whether grubs are actually the issue
-
Assessing severity and realistic thresholds
-
Explaining treatment vs. monitoring options
-
Recommending trusted specialists if needed
-
Advising on cost-effective DIY steps if appropriate. Google is a great place to start but be specific when searching:
ie: “Maple Ridge Grub Treatment process for DIY homeowner with major (or minor) damage”
Some homeowners prefer to handle treatment themselves after understanding the process. Others want referrals to licensed providers.
Either approach can work — what matters is making an informed decision.
SHOWN BELOW, THE TYPICAL GRUB LIFECYCLE CAN ALSO BE AFFECTED BY MILD WINTERS LIKE WE JUST HAD.
